Now here's the meat, you want to understand the exegetical process of a text before you can start crafting your initial sermon. This will help you build your library, but more importantly lay the foundation needed. The exegetical process helps you to extract out of the text which is what we want to do in preaching. However, some people want to eiseget the text by reading into the text. Learn more about exegesis and eisegesis.
I have outlined three areas: Resources Needed, Biblical Studies, and Homiletics. These are the building block tools to help you unearth the hidden treasures of scripture and organize your sermon by using different types of methods outlined by each person identified below. They are organized as a guide to help in the beginning of the sermon preparation. The O.O. method was taught to me in seminary by the Late Rev. Dr. Miles J. Jones.
What is the key to sermon preparation?
Practice Practice Practice
Biblical Studies Section: Choose a passage of scripture that will go along with the 9 Biblical Criticism found in Hayes and Holladay book. Then perform your exegetical process using the other resources in addition to the websites. You may find other information. So do your research.
Once you start to understand the Exegetical process better, then start on the Homiletics section. You would want to write a sermon outline using the OO method. The first mistake we make is to use the commentary, we want to wrestle and meditate on the text way before using the commentary. So take your time and turn over every word written. The OO method is your building block for your sermon preparation. I've placed these books in order so that you will not be too overwhelm at first. When you feel confident move down the list. Over time you will find other resources but these will be the main resources in your library. If your looking for other resources take a look at my other page "Minister's Library".
